MEET KELLY

Kelly is rooted in our community

Rooted in LD-8: After earning my Ph.D. degree in New York, I married Matthew Hyland, a proud Connetquot graduate, born and raised in Oakdale by his native Long Island parents. Although Matthew took our family across and around the world in service to the Air Force of the United States of America, his family became my family and Long Island became a homebase—my firstborn son even took his first step in Oakdale. So when he did retire as a Colonel, there was no place better for us to land and finally put down permanent roots than here.
Here, we found the home we have longed for. Our kids are thriving in the Bayport-Blue Point School District and playing soccer and baseball in town. I have been welcomed and became deeply involved in our community, PTA and School Improvement Team, leading the Cub Scouts in Pack 130, putting science to work in performing school demonstrations and proudly placing flags at our firehouse on 9/11.

Journey: I grew up across the sound in Connecticut, in a mid-sized city, in a community very similar to Long Island. I looked up to my grandparents and aunts and uncles, who were fire chiefs, police officers, Vietnam vets, nurses, and teachers. We had big clambake family reunions. Growing up, I experienced first hand the same challenges that we face here. My mom was a single parent that worked hard and found opportunities regardless of economic hardship, empty storefronts, and limited public services. Just as here, my community was proud of our roots, our natural beauty, and the cultural interests that brought us together. Later, my professional career included being a national laboratory researcher elevating the role of science in policy making, building programs at the U.S. Department of Energy, and advising at the U.S. Senate. I thrive at the nexus of science and strategic planning and have been entrusted by the U.S. government with high visibility and high-stakes projects.

Why am I running? My husband retired in December 2024 after 22 years in the U.S. Air Force. Oakdale has been our home base, and we are so grateful to have more family time together now.

I know how important it is not to just speak up for what the community needs but also listen to the voices in the community.

And I have been listening. I have heard the calls for better housing options for our parents and our children in the future, good jobs, clean air and safe water, and care for our veterans.

I know how important it is to give the community the tools it needs to thrive, to succeed financially, and ensure that our kids could also live happily and comfortably as they grow into adulthood.
