What your Suffolk County Legislator does?

County Legislators work together to advance policies for Suffolk County that improve our communities. Legislators have to work together to get things done. Legislative committee meetings involve looking at bills, making amendments, and getting feedback from others.

Legislators draft and vote on laws, respond to constituent concerns, and allocate funds. Legislators are responsible for passing local laws and policies, approving the county budget, overseeing public services that include:

  • police, fire, emergency services,
  • health services and social programs,
  • transportation and infrastructure,
  • environmental protection and water quality,
  • parks and cultural affairs.

For example, in 2025, all 18 Suffolk Legislators unanimously passed the county’s $4 billion budget.

What is the Suffolk County Legislature?

Suffolk County Legislature is the lawmaking body for Suffolk County, NY. It runs like a city council, but at the county level. There are 18 County Legislators, each representing one district. Legislators are elected to two-year terms.

The body elects a Presiding Officer who leads meetings and sets agendas. There is a majority and minority leader. The elected County Executive oversees the day-to-day running of the county and proposes the annual budget—but it must be approved or amended by the Legislature.
